Richard Madden, WIP 1
This is legitimately my screen while I paint because the ref I’m using is tiny.
1. Reference at original size. I keep it there to compare the general look of the entire composition. It’s ideally what the final product should look like and feel like in terms of expression, hues, etc.
2. Upside-down ref! I switch off drawing right-side-up and upside-down. Keeps proportions and the likeness in check. Faces upside-down confuse the brain, and help me see shapes instead of a likeness. Makes it easier to copy.
3. Zoomed-in ref. For details, proportions, general likeness, etc.
4. Corel ref. To eyedrop colors off of. The colors got a bit compressed and simplified, so I don’t go looking for every single hue. I usually pick a major one, and then blend it with the others to get those shades in between. I use some colors from the given Corel colors as well.
5. Canvas! What I’ve been painting. Still rough. Some mistakes I need to go back and fix. I’m going to leave this like that for now. I’ll come back tomorrow, and my fresh eyes should help me fix things up a bit.
